Going rock climbing was something I always wanted to do so when I learned that the university offered it for free I knew I had to take this opportunity to try it out. This week I finally got to try it for the first time after trying and failing to go for almost three years and the experience was great!

Rock climbing is held at the EVO Rock + Fitness Climbing Gym in Portland. It features many different climbing paths of various difficulty and two different sizes of walls (the smaller beginner ones and the regular large walls). The climbing paths get changed periodically so climbers can always expect a new challenge to await them when they come in. It also has a bouldering section which is an area of small walls that you can climb without a harness or rope.

Going into this I was nervous because it’s something I’ve never done before and I was worried I wouldn’t have the upper body strength to do it. Also, I am slightly afraid of heights (which I realized while I was climbing is maybe more than a slight fear, but oh well). But even with my hesitations and fears I still had a great time. I didn’t climb much my first day and I didn’t get very high up, but I still had a lot of fun watching my friends climb and encouraging them as they went. Overall, I would say that this was a very fun experience and I hope that as I continue to go I can get over some of those fears and improve. It’s a great way to get some exercise while still doing something fun and making new friends.

Rock climbing is offered by the Outing Club on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30pm to around 10pm. The drive there takes around 30 minutes which gives you a good chunk of time to climb rocks to your hearts content! If you get the chance, definitely try it out. Sign up for one of the sessions at the box office. Spaces are limited!
