What is the MMA Club?
The MMA Club meets weekly at 8:30 PM on Wednesdays in the Campus Center gym. Initially started by a couple of resident assistants (RAs), it has grown into a thriving community of fifty members, according to Presence. That growth is partly due to the leadership of president Bobby Cielakie, a senior Medical Biology major who has been involved with the club for the past two years. Last year, the MMA Club won ‘Club of the Year,’ which was awarded by the Office of Student Engagement.
An Inclusive Environment
“The UNE MMA Club is all-inclusive. Anyone can come,” said Cielakie. “We don’t go too crazy; we teach techniques, basic survival skills, and self-defense. It’s important to know some basics just in case you find yourself in a tough situation.”
The club has members from various majors, including medical biology, marine science, environmental studies, and business. It’s an opportunity to connect with peers you might never meet in a typical classroom setting, explained Cielakie.
Overcoming Fears
For those who might be hesitant to join, Cielakie has some advice: “I was a little scared to show up my first day, too. But just come and check it out. You won’t be thrown into the deep end. We have a lot of fun while learning new skills.”
The supportive atmosphere that Cielakie encourages allows everyone to participate at their own pace, ensuring a comfortable experience for newcomers.
