On Labor Day weekend, I discovered that getting to the airport from the University of New England can feel like an uphill battle for many students, particularly those who live several hours away from campus. With limited transportation options and rising gas and transportation costs, the journey is anything but straightforward.
As a newcomer to UNE, I know that many of us have small social circles and may not have acquaintances who can offer transportation, forcing us to depend on public transit or other costly options.
The price tag can be shocking for those considering ridesharing services like Uber or Lyft. A round trip to the Portland airport typically ranges from $60 to $80, depending on demand and the time of day. That is a hefty sum for a ride, especially for students who travel frequently, like myself.
On Saturday, September 1st, I was headed to the airport with a 7:34 a.m. flight. With no buses running early enough to get me there on time, I was left with few options. Rather than shelling out $30 to $40 for a one-way Uber to the airport, I chose to take public transportation the night before. That decision resulted in me spending nine hours at the terminal, waiting for my flight, simply to save money.
Public transportation offers a more cost-effective option, though it comes with its own challenges. Changing bus lines can make traveling more difficult, especially at night when the frequency of service decreases.
Students unfamiliar with the area may find navigating multiple routes confusing and potentially unsafe. Being at remote bus stops or walking long distances in the dark is inconvenient and raises concerns about personal safety.
One possible resolution to these transportation issues is implementing a shuttle bus service exclusively for UNE students. This shuttle could operate on a customizable timetable to accommodate the timing of early and late flights, providing a secure, dependable, and cost-effective choice for transportation to and from the airport.
A successful model of this is a program called GO Boston, a dedicated airport shuttle service to and from Logan International Airport or other New England airports to all Boston, Metro West, and Worcester area colleges, Universities, and even boarding schools.
Adopting or partnering with a similar shuttle service at UNE could significantly enhance transportation options for all students.
Implementing such a service might seem impractical for UNE due to logistical challenges. However, it’s worth considering how this could enhance student life and make our campus more accessible.
While some may argue that a dedicated airport transit service could contribute to UNE becoming a “suitcase campus,” it’s important to clarify that this service specifically addresses travel needs rather than encouraging a pattern of leaving.
Providing reliable transportation to the airport could allow students to plan their trips more efficiently and help maximize their time on campus engaging in activities and building connections with peers.
Ultimately, this service could enhance the overall student experience by promoting a more balanced approach to campus life and travel.
