A new running community is taking shape at UNE, with sophomore Dan Hargrove leading the charge. The athletic training major is working to establish an official Running Club that will bring together runners of all levels, offering students a way to get fit, de-stress, and enjoy Maine’s scenic coastlines with friends.
Inspired by his own journey training for a half marathon, Hargrove saw the potential for a running community at UNE. “I decided that I wanted to run a half marathon, so I started training for one, and I kind of fell in love with it. It was great, both for physical health [and] mental health. I know a couple of my friends here on campus also enjoy it, so I thought, ‘Why not create a club where people who enjoy running are able to do it with other people,’” said Hargrove.
Building Momentum in Interest
The idea is already generating buzz among students. McKenzie Berry, who joined an early trial run, shared her enthusiasm: “I think the concept is super fun and love that UNE has started a run club.” Senior medical biology major Caycie Carrozzo expressed interest as well, noting that timing would be key: “I don’t see why not, just depends on what time they’d meet and stuff.”
Taking Shape
While still in its early stages, Hargrove and vice president Harley Dyer have been testing different formats and gathering feedback. The initial runs have started at the Campus Center and taken students down Hills Beach Road along the water, typically covering two to three miles.
Ruby Aylward, who attended an early session, highlighted the importance of finding the right meeting time: “The only thing is that I’ve only been to one meeting…I went to the first one but then the new time didn’t work out for me.” Hargrove is taking such feedback into account as he works to establish a regular schedule that accommodates more students.
Looking Ahead
As the club works through Maine’s challenging weather and packed student schedules, Hargrove is developing creative ways to keep future members engaged, even when outdoor running isn’t possible. The environment will be “super friendly and welcoming. I like to think it’s a good place to be,” he said.
