UNE’s Women’s Basketball on the road to fight Western New England for the second year in a row, this year looking for a win.
SPRINGFIELD, MA- The UNE Women’s basketball team played Western New England University Thursday, February 27th for the second round of play-offs. The Golden Bears’ home court is in Springfield Mass. The team traveled the three hours south, eager and ready to take home a win against the number one seed in the conference. And they did just that.
Abby Cavallaro brought up her career-high with a total of 25 points in the game. Cavallaro also made at least nine perfect free throws throughout the night. Teammates Madalyn Sanborn and Sadie Nelson followed suit as they had eight boards and four blocks. These two defensive players forced 19 turnovers on WNE.
Western New England was seeing a six-game win streak until UNE stepped on their court. Courtney Carlson, one of WNE’s best, had a total of 13 points and counting until fouling out halfway through the 4th quarter. The Golden Bears, as a team, were shooting a 1-for-12 in the frame.
UNE lost their grip in the third quarter and let up five turnovers, causing the rivals to up their score. WNE’s Courtney Carlson and UNE’s Ashley Coneys went back and forth scoring, bringing the score to a standing 58-53, UNE.
Cavallaro sealed the deal on Thursday’s game as she made four points in the last 18 seconds, bringing the final score to a 62-53 game.
The team will be on the road again this Saturday as they travel to Beverly Mass to play Endicott College for the final CCC game. The Gulls will have the Nor’Easters on their home court at 5 pm, as both teams put their all into this game.
