Someone Great

If you’re looking for comedy, romance, realism, and a lot of sadness to divulge in later this evening, then check out Someone Great on Netflix. This movie is bound together with heartbreak, friendship, and a killer cast. It stars Gina Rodriguez, LaKeith Stanfield, Brittany Snow, and Dewanda Wise. Have you ever gone through a breakup so bad that you have to blare a Lizzo soundtrack and dance around your kitchen?

If you answered yes, then you will fall in love with the main character Jenny. She thought she had her whole life figured out. Then Jenny faces an unexpected heartbreak that makes her question her whole life. She finds herself reminiscing and looking to her friends for love and guidance. The movie has plenty of jokes that will at least make you smile and some serious life messages. Don’t worry… that heartbreak won’t be the end of your life!

The Proposal

Okay, okay, maybe real-life heartbreak and friendship isn’t your cup of tea this Valentine’s Day. If you’re looking for some more humor, a happy ending, and a bit more of a classic, then check out The Proposal on Hulu. It has an iconic cast starring Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds, and the legendary Betty White. This rom com will surely make you laugh! Margaret Tate is close to losing her citizenship, so she bribes her assistant to “marry” her to stay in the country. The word quickly spreads, and Andrew Paxton’s family cannot wait to meet the new addition to the family. Will they be able to keep up the marriage of convenience trope or will it all go crashing down in flames? Watch this hilarious movie to find out!

Love, Simon

Are you looking for more LGBTQ+ representation this Valentine’s Day? Then watch Love, Simon on Hulu. This movie has the perfect mix of humor and realism. The main character’s witty commentary throughout the film will surely make you chuckle. It follows most of the cliche tropes in nearly all romcoms, but it has a different level of integrity. It combats the fear of coming out in high school and the juxtaposition of being straight, but it doesn’t oversell its driving point. Thanks to an anonymous post on a messaging board, Simon finds himself falling quickly under their spell. Practically the whole premise of the movie is finding out who this anonymous person is and if he can crack the mystery. Of course, with any romance flick there is tension that must be solved. Will Simon get his happy ending?

10 Things I Hate About You

Perhaps this Valentine’s Day you’re looking for the cliche bad boy romance meets angsty teen… Then pull up this 90s movie for your entertainment. You can watch 10 Things I Hate About You on Hulu or Disney+. Once you get past the terrible fashion choices of the 90s, it’s worth it! This movie follows the story of two sisters who are not allowed to date.

However, an ultimatum is given to the “popular” sister, Bianca, that if the new punk age sister, Katarina, gets a boyfriend, then they can both date. A plan is put in play and soon tension filled romance is budding. It’s a back-and-forth game playing on the cliches of high school love. The plot, let’s be honest, is not amazing. However, the acting and the connection between the actors is palpable. So, what are the 10things Katarina hates about bad boy Patrick? Watch this cheesy 90s flick to find out!

The Princess Bride

Okay, so maybe you’re really for the actual classic star of this article. If you’re truly hunting for the 80s portion of romance, then cue up The Princess Bride on Disney+. If the cliche, boring, mainstream romcom isn’t for you, then check out this rendition of sci-fi love. It might reignite your understanding of true love.

The movie will immediately pull you in when the grandfather sits down to read his grandson a story. It will pique your curiosity and the undying commitment of Westley will have your heart swooning. It’s not your typical romance since it involves kidnapping, a long journey, several sword fights, and a killer cast! But if that’s the style you’re looking for, then in the wise words of Westley, I will give you three words “As You Wish.” Watch this movie to figure out the importance of that phrase!
